The Belgorod nuclear submarine resurfaced off the coast of the Severodvinsk naval base after alerting NATO intelligence, which, after analyzing some satellite photos of the "top secret" subarctic base, saw that it had disappeared.
Any secret or announced mission of the Russian submarine K-329 Belgorod, classified as an underwater missile cruiser developing Project 09852 and codenamed by NATO as "Oscar II", creates concern in the Western secret services: being not only the most Russia's largest and most powerful nuclear warship, but because it is the only Moscow Navy vessel capable of carrying the Poseidon. One of the most formidable weapons systems on earth.
According to what was observed by American intelligence, among the ships that took part in what turned out to be an offshore exercise, was the Belgoord. Modified to launch the Poseidon torpedo, a weapon capable of “flooding coastal cities in the United States with radioactive tsunamis.” Pentagon analysts believe the Russians may have encountered technical difficulties.
However, the Belgorod, with or without the Poseidon torpedoes, remains an extremely formidable submarine. 184 m long and 18.2 m wide, with a weight of over 14,700 tons, it can reach a depth of 520 m and not surface for about four months. In addition to the unique Poseidon weapons system, Belgorod can host nuclear-powered "mini-submarines" to conduct covert operations in deep waters. These Paltus-class mini-submarines can target "underwater infrastructure," such as submerged cables.
Thanks to two OK-650M.02 reactors, Belgorod can reach speeds of over 32 knots (50 km/h), carrying six Status -6 nuclear torpedoes.
Avenging weapons of Belgorod
As explained, Belgorod is intended to carry Poseidon missiles, conceived as retaliatory weapons and designed specifically to "hit the enemy" that carries out a nuclear attack on the Russian Federation. U.S. officials said Russia has yet to successfully test the weapon system, and the return of ice to the subarctic region could limit the window to conduct operations. The Poseidon autonomous torpedo test, if announced or revealed, would only further raise tensions in Washington and Moscow.
Another mission from the Russians
Last week, the Cuban Foreign Ministry announced that three ships and a submarine of the Russian Navy would arrive in the port of Havana on June 12. This visit "does not represent a threat" to the Caribbean region, according to the Cuban government, which underlined that none of these ships have "nuclear weapons" on board. The units to arrive in Havana are the frigate Admiral Gorshkov, the nuclear-powered submarine Kazan and two supply and assistance units, the tanker Pashin and the tug Nikolai Chiker.
