Ukraine reports minor advances in the east

Russia carried out dozens of airstrikes against Ukraine overnight between October 6 and 7, as the Ukrainian military reported continued slow progress in its counteroffensive.

The General Staff of the Ukrainian army said in its daily bulletin that its forces were making slow progress in the areas of Melitopol in the south and Bakhmut in the east.

A spokesman for eastern Ukrainian forces told RFE/RL on October 6 that Kiev forces have taken "400 meters" of territory in the Bahmut area and are holding the new positions against heavy Russian attacks.

"I cannot give you details because the enemy uses this information," said spokesman Ilya Yevlash. "When we make more progress, only then will we be able to speak more openly."

Four civilians are reported to have been injured in the Black Sea city of Odesa. They were injured during an overnight rocket attack that hit residential buildings. The missile was fired from the Ukrainian region of Crimea, which is under Russian occupation, the Ukrainian military said.

Air raid alerts were issued overnight in the regions of Kharkiv, Poltava, Chernihiv and Sumy. In Russia, meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense reported on October 7 that a Ukrainian drone had crashed in the Moscow area, reporting no damage.

This ministry said that it has repelled a drone attack from Ukraine in Crimea, near the port city of Sevastopol. Radio Free Europe has not been able to verify these claims. Ukraine rarely comments on Russian accusations related to attacks inside the territory of Russia./REL
