Israel was caught off guard by the most 'ambitious' operation Hamas has ever carried out from Gaza. The scale of what is happening is unprecedented. Hamas breached the wire separating Gaza from Israel in multiple places in the most serious cross-border attack Israel has faced in more than a generation.
The attack came a day after the 50th anniversary of the surprise attack by Egypt and Syria in 1973 that started a major war in the Middle East. The significance of the date has not been overlooked by Hamas leaders.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says his country is at war and that its enemies will pay dearly for it. Videos and photos of dead Israelis, civilians as well as soldiers, are all over social media.
Other videos of Hamas gunmen transporting soldiers and civilians into captivity in Gaza have angered and alarmed Israelis.
Within hours, Israel was responding with airstrikes in Gaza, killing scores of Palestinians. Its generals would plan a ground operation next. The presence of Israeli hostages there means it will be even more complicated than previous incursions.
For months, it has been clear that there was a deepening risk of a flare-up between Palestinian armed groups and Israel. Even where it happened was a total surprise, outside the armed wing of Hamas.
