President Donald Trump, speaking from the Oval Office, said a full ceasefire to end the war between Russia and Ukraine is likely to happen "very soon."
"We will have a complete ceasefire very soon in the Russia-Ukraine war," Trump said. The US president also said a treaty to divide up territory between the two countries was being negotiated "as we speak."
"We're going to have a contract and the contract is being negotiated," Trump said. He explained that the contract is for land division. "It's being negotiated as we speak," he stressed.
Trump, who recently had separate calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky to implement a partial ceasefire, said he is adamant in seeking an end to the war to stop the killing and save the United States money spent on military aid to Ukraine.
Trump stated that the United States is close to signing an agreement with Ukraine that would give them access to rare earth minerals.
"We're doing very well with Ukraine and Russia. And one of the things we're doing is signing a rare earths deal with Ukraine very quickly," Trump said at the White House.
The United States is signing agreements "in various countries to exploit rare earths and minerals and many other things around the world," he added.
The rare earths deal, which has been under negotiation for weeks, is perceived by Kiev as a strategic partnership that could secure continued US support against Russian encroachment.
Trump, who returned to the White House in January, has tied U.S. aid to Ukraine to access its rare earth reserves. The deposits are considered economically profitable and of strategic importance.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Trump were scheduled to sign the agreement in late February. However, a heated confrontation between the two leaders in the Oval Office led to the cancellation of the talks and Zelensky's early departure.
