The Vatican has revealed details from the Pope's private funeral ceremony.
Pope Francis was buried in the side aisle of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, between the Pauline Chapel and the Sforza Chapel. According to the Vatican, the Salus Populi Romani, an icon of Mary, is located in the Pauline Chapel, which was a favorite of Francis.
The Pope's funeral rite was preceded by the singing of four psalms and accompanied by five intercessions, followed by the singing of the "Our Father."
After the final prayer, the sigils were pressed into the coffin by the Cardinal Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, Kevin Joseph Farrell, the Prefecture of the Papal Household, the Office of Liturgical Celebrations of the Roman Pontiff, and the Liberian Chapter.
The coffin was placed in the grave and sprinkled with holy water while the Regina Caeli was sung.
The notary of the Liberian Chapter read the act certifying the burial and it was then signed by the Cardinal Camerlengo, the Regent of the Papal Family, Monsignor Leonardo Sapienza, and by the Master of Papal Liturgical Celebrations, Archbishop Diego Ravelli.
At least 400,000 people attended the funeral ceremony to escort Pope Francis to his final resting place. Among them were many heads of state and members of royal families.
