Jimmy Kimmel has responded to criticism from President Donald Trump regarding a joke he made about Melania Trump, whom he described as a "future widow."
The comment was made during his evening show, just days before a shooting at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner.
The moderator described the statement as a light joke, noting that it was about the 23-year age difference between the president and his wife.
“Our First Lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, she’s so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, shine like a future widow,” Kimmel said during Thursday night’s skit. In his first monologue on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” after the shooting, the comedian said the joke was “a very light-hearted jab at the fact that President Trump is almost 80 years old and she’s younger than me. It was in no way a call for assassination and they know that; I’ve been very vocal for many years speaking out against gun violence in particular,” he added. “I agree that the rhetoric of hate and violence is something that we need to reject; I think the place to start on that is to talk to your spouse,” Kimmel said.
After this, Melania Trump reacted by accusing the moderator of using hate speech and inciting violence.
"That monologue about my family is not comedy, his words are corrosive and deepen the political disease within America. How many times will ABC executives allow Kimmel's terrible behavior at the expense of our community," said Melania Trump.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has called for Kimmel's removal from the show, bringing up previous clashes between them, including an episode in September after the host joked about the murder of Charlie Kirk.
Kimmel's latest comment comes in a tense political climate in the US, where some of the criticism is related to the Trump administration's policies, including issues such as the war in Iran, the deportation of immigrants and attitudes towards the Pope.
