Trump's extreme decision: Death penalty for every murderer in Washington

President Donald Trump announced today that his administration will seek the death penalty for all murders committed in the US capital.

"Anyone who kills in the capital will face capital punishment. Capital punishment for crimes in the capital. That's the only way to stop the violence," Trump said during a meeting with his cabinet.

He described the policy as a “very strong preventive measure,” adding: “I don’t know if the country is ready for this… but we have no other choice.”

Trump's proposal raises numerous legal and constitutional questions. Washington, D.C., does not have a death penalty law, but unlike other U.S. states, murder prosecutions in the capital are handled by the U.S. Attorney's Office, a federal agency appointed by the president.

This means that the federal administration can use its jurisdiction to seek executions, even though local DC law does not provide for such a measure.

Legal analysts say the decision could lead to strong clashes between federal authorities and District of Columbia authorities, which have traditionally opposed the death penalty.

Human rights activists warn that this is an attempt to bring back a practice abandoned in many countries, undermining the national trend towards reducing executions.

On the other hand, Trump supporters see it as a strong message against the rise in violence in the city, where gun crime and murder statistics have increased significantly in recent years.
