Iran's new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has issued what appears to be a new message, the second major statement since his appointment nearly two weeks ago, in which the text is not accompanied by video or audio.
Khamenei has not appeared publicly since he was elected to succeed his father earlier this month, and it was not clear how or when he visited the Iranian capital. The new statement was accompanied by still images of Khamenei, the authenticity of which has not yet been verified by CNN.
A little over a week ago, in his first alleged message, which was also read on state television, he delivered a defiant rebuke to the US and Israel and demanded reparations.
A shorter statement was issued on behalf of Khamenei earlier on Friday following the assassination of the Intelligence Minister in Tehran earlier this week. "Security may be denied to internal and external enemies and granted to all our compatriots," the statement said.
There has been much talk that Mojtaba may have been seriously injured, or disfigured by the Israeli attacks, and that this is one of the reasons why he does not appear on screen. Others have speculated that he may have been killed and that the regime is using his name to maintain stability in the country. Whatever the truth, Iran is currently being led by a 'shadow' who is nowhere to be seen.
