The United States is sending thousands of additional soldiers and Marines to the Middle East about three weeks ahead of schedule, three US officials told Reuters news agency.
The US Navy ship USS Boxer, carrying the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, is departing from the US West Coast. The group includes about 2,200–2,500 Marines and support ships such as the USS Portland and USS Comstock, bringing a total of about 4,000 soldiers.
Officials stressed that no official decision has yet been made to send ground troops to Iran, but these additional forces are intended to increase American military capacity for possible future operations in the region, especially in the context of the ongoing war with Iran and efforts to protect the oil transportation routes in Hormuz.
Asked yesterday at the White House about the possibility of sending ground troops to Iran, President Donald Trump told reporters: "I'm not putting troops anywhere, and if I were, I certainly wouldn't tell you."
The US and Israel have carried out thousands of airstrikes, while Iran has stepped up attacks on ships and neighboring countries, affecting global energy prices. The Pentagon and the administration are considering further reinforcement options, but without a major ground commitment so far.
