The US State Department said the deadly Israeli attack on a charity convoy was "unacceptable" regardless of the reason.
Spokesman Matthew Miller noted that the Israel Defense Forces called the attack a case of mistaken identity.
" We have to wait and see the outcome of this investigation to know with confidence what happened. It doesn't really matter how they went wrong. At the end of the day, you have seven dead aid workers who were there trying to provide humanitarian aid. So whatever the reason that led to this tragedy, whatever the mistake that happened within the IDF, it's unacceptable and they need to do better and they need to take measures to ensure that this doesn't happen again ," he said.
Miller also said that Israeli officials should not wait for the outcome of this investigation to put in place better deconfliction measures and better coordination to protect humanitarian workers and protect all civilians on the ground.
Despite the attack, the US is still working on building a pier to deliver aid to Gaza, Miller said.
" This effort is continuous. The Pentagon is working hard on this. We want this up as soon as possible. The real issue is the ability to deliver aid to Gaza once it reaches the strip, either by land or by sea ," he concluded.
