The U.S. deputy attorney general announced Friday that the Justice Department has opened a federal civil rights investigation into the fatal shooting of nurse Alex Pretti in Minneapolis last Saturday by immigration officers, as violent protests continued in the streets.

"We are reviewing everything that would shed light on that day," said Todd Blanche, the deputy attorney general, at a press conference Friday morning in Washington, DC.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) also said Friday that the FBI will lead the investigation into the latest killing.

Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse at a Minneapolis military veterans hospital and an activist, died while protesting aggressive immigration raids and protester control tactics by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, border patrol and other federal agencies.

He was the third person shot during the surge in immigration enforcement personnel sent to the Twin Cities area of Minneapolis and Saint Paul in Minnesota by the Trump administration as part of its mass deportation agenda, and the second to die after Renee Good was shot to death on January 7.

The Justice Department's announcement on Friday was a significant development as the Trump administration had previously indicated much closer scrutiny by DHS.

Blanche said the new plan was like “any investigation that the Justice Department and the FBI do every day. It means we’re looking at video, we’re talking to witnesses, we’re trying to figure out what happened.” The Justice Department has not opened such an investigation into Good’s death.
