
The United Nations Security Council has announced that it will meet for an emergency meeting after the assassination of the head of the Political Bureau of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh in Iran.
Russian First Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dmitry Polyansky said the extraordinary meeting will be held at 4:00 p.m. New York time on July 31.
"Following a request by Iran that was supported by China, Algeria and Russia, and serving as the next president of the UNSC, we scheduled an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council regarding the assassination in Tehran of the head of the Political Bureau of Hamas. Ismail Haniyeh for 16:00 New York time on July 31,” Polyansky wrote on Telegram.
Earlier, the Palestinian movement Hamas said Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli strike that targeted the residence where he was staying in Tehran, where he had arrived for the inauguration of the country's president-elect, Masoud Pezeshkian.
Al Hadath reported that Haniyeh was killed in a direct missile attack. The deputy head of the Hamas Political Bureau, Mousa Abu Marzook, has warned that Haniyeh's murder will not go unanswered. Israeli authorities declined to comment to CNN on Haniyeh's death.
