US envoy Steve Witkoff said during a statement at the White House that Iranian officials, during negotiations held before the war, insisted that they had the right to enrich uranium.
According to him, this stance led the United States to conclude that Iran was not willing to abandon its nuclear ambitions.
" In our meetings with the Iranians, we heard from them this: 'The Iranians have an inalienable right to enrich.' We later learned that they had enough 60% enriched material, 460 kilograms, to build 11 atomic bombs ," Witkoff said, referring to previous diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran.
“These are indisputable signs, among many others,” he added, “that their regime had not given the negotiating team the authority to reach the agreement you sought.”
