Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, confirmed during a cabinet meeting at the White House today that the US has been negotiating with Iran through diplomatic channels with Pakistan. He added that Pakistan is acting as a mediator at this stage.
" I can report to you today that we, along with your foreign policy team, have presented a 15-point action list that forms the framework for a peace agreement. This has been circulated through the Pakistani government acting as a mediator ," Witkoff told President Trump.
Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also confirmed that his country is serving as a mediator, writing on social media that the 15-point plan is being considered by Iran. Witkoff said the framework has, so far, "resulted in strong and positive messages and talks," though he declined to elaborate on specific terms, citing the sensitivity of diplomatic discussions.
Witkoff's reporting comes as Trump administration officials, including Vice President JD Vance, are working to organize a meeting in Pakistan this weekend to discuss an exit from the Iran war.
Witkoff said today that Iranian officials insisted they had the right to enrich uranium during negotiations held before the war, leading US officials to conclude that they were not willing to abandon their nuclear ambitions.
"During our meetings with the Iranians, we heard from them the following words: 'The Iranians have the inalienable right to enrich themselves.' Then we heard that they possessed 60% enriched material, 460 kilograms, to make 11 atomic bombs. These are irrefutable signs, among many other signs, that their regime had not given the negotiating team the authority to make a deal that you sought," Witkoff said further during the meeting.
