The US president has held talks with Kurdish leaders in Iran and is exploring the possibility of providing weapons, training or intelligence support to anti-regime groups, according to US officials.
United States President Donald Trump is considering supporting groups in Iran that are willing to take up arms to overthrow the regime, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing US officials.
According to the same sources, this approach could transform Iranian factions into ground forces that would be supported, at least theoretically, by Washington.
US officials say Trump held talks with Kurdish leaders in Iran on Sunday and is continuing to reach out to other local leaders who could benefit from Tehran's weakening.
Kurdish forces have a significant presence along the Iraq-Iran border. Meanwhile, Israel has bombed targets in western Iran, fueling speculation that it is creating the conditions for a possible Kurdish advance in the area.
White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said that “President Trump has spoken with many regional partners,” but did not directly confirm his objectives. Officials stressed that the president has not yet made a final decision, including whether to provide weapons, training or intelligence support to groups opposing the Iranian regime.
During the announcement of the launch of US and Israeli attacks against Iran, Trump called on the Iranian people to "take power into their own hands," adding that "America supports you with overwhelming force and destructive power."
According to the Wall Street Journal, the consideration of support, even if conditional, for armed groups with different objectives marks a step beyond public calls for a popular uprising.
On Tuesday, Trump twice shared on social media a Washington Post opinion piece on the so-called “Trump Doctrine.” The author of the piece, Marc Thiessen, argued that “there is no need for an American invasion,” noting that “the Iranian people are the force on the ground.”
