Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared on Saturday that Russia is preparing a new attack on Ukraine using the hypersonic Oreshnik missile, referring to information received from Ukrainian, American and European secret services.
In a post on the X platform, Zelensky said there are indications of a combined strike on Ukrainian territory, including Kiev, with the use of various types of weaponry.
" We see signs of preparation for a combined attack on Ukrainian territory, including Kiev, using various weapons. These medium-range weapons could be used in such an attack ," he wrote, referring to the advanced Russian Oreshnik missile.
The warning comes as the US embassy in Kiev announced that it has information about a possible large-scale air strike that could occur "at any moment" over the next 24 hours.
The embassy urged American citizens in Ukraine to be prepared to immediately take shelter in bunkers in the event of an air raid alert.
Russia has already used the Oreshnik missile twice against Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously stated that the hypersonic missile is virtually impossible to neutralize due to its speed, which is said to reach up to 10 times the speed of sound.
Meanwhile, tensions rose further after a drone attack in the Russian-controlled Luhansk region in eastern Ukraine.
Russian officials say the death toll from a bomb attack on a student dormitory has risen to 18, with some of the victims reportedly young women. Three more people are still trapped under the rubble.
Following the attack, Putin ordered the Russian military to prepare retaliation options against Ukraine, after Moscow accused Kiev of deliberately targeting a teacher training college in the town of Starobilsk.
Ukrainian forces denied responsibility for the strike on the dormitory, stating that their target was an elite Russian drone unit in the area and that the operations were carried out in accordance with international humanitarian law.
On the other hand, Putin stated that there were no military facilities in the hit area and described the attack as a "terrorist act."
