SPD Secretary General Matthias Miersch has commented on the first results of the German election, describing the defeat as "historic" and a bitter evening for the party. He stressed that the coalition formed by the SPD has failed and been overthrown by the voters.
In a response to the possibility of the SPD being part of the next government, Miersch said that the party members will have the final say, leaving open the possibility of an intra-party decision on the steps to follow after these results.
"This is a bitter election result for the Social Democratic Party, it is also an electoral defeat. I think we can be proud of the fact that we have worked together so closely in difficult times."
"I would have liked the result to have been better, but we can fight for better election results in the future and we will recognize our responsibility for our country and continue to work accordingly," said SPD leader Olaf Scholz as he connected the exit polls of the elections in Germany.
Scholz congratulated Friedrich Merz, the leader of the conservative Christian Democratic party, who is leading in the polls.
