Europe "watches and listens" from Berlin/ The voting process in

59.2 million Germans were eligible to vote in these elections.

The voting process in Germany has ended. All polling stations have closed and the first exit polls are now expected to come out. The process was remarkably calm and there was a massive turnout of 84 percent, the highest since 1990.

59.2 million Germans were eligible to vote in these elections, although millions of them have already voted by mail.

The Federal Election Officer is expected to announce the provisional election results and publish the provisional seat allocation and provisionally elected candidates in the early hours of February 24, 2025.

According to German media polls, Olaf Scholz's SPD is expected to receive 15 percent of the vote. Friederich Merz's CDU is leading with 29.5 percent. Robert Habeck's "Greens" are expected to receive 12.5 percent, while Alice Weidel's AfD is expected to receive around 21 percent.

If these percentages do not change, Olaf Scholz's SPD will receive 105 MPs, Friederich Merz's CDU 205 MPs, Alice Weidel's AfD 146 MPs, Robert Habeck's "Greens" 87 MPs, "The Left" would receive 52 MPs, while the BSW would receive only 35 MPs.

A clear election victory is expected for the CDU/CSU alliance, which is likely to end up as the strongest force. The party leadership is hoping for a result of over 30 percent. But even under these circumstances, Friedrich Merz is likely to seek the mandate to form a coalition government.

Regardless of the election result, one thing is certain: the new Bundestag will be composed very differently from the previous one. Above all, it will be much smaller. After the electoral reform of the traffic light coalition, which has now entered into force, the number of seats will be limited to 630. This will be achieved primarily by eliminating overloading and compensatory seats. For comparison: in 2021, 735 deputies were elected to the Bundestag.

The outcome of these elections will be of great importance for Germany, as this country will have to make major decisions both at home and on the world stage.

As the largest provider of military aid to Ukraine, after the United States, the new German government will also face the new American leadership.
