Three US soldiers have been killed in a drone attack in Jordan and at least 25 others have been injured. The attack reportedly took place at Tower 22 in Jordan, near the border with Syria.
The killing of three Americans in Tower 22 in Jordan near the border with Syria is an escalation of an already insecure situation in the Middle East. There have been more than 158 attacks on US and coalition forces in Iraq and Syria since Friday, although officials have described the ongoing barrage of drones and missiles as unsuccessful, as they have often not caused serious injuries or infrastructure damage.
It is unclear why air defenses failed to intercept the drone, which appears to be the first known attack on Tower 22 since attacks on US and coalition forces began on October 17. US forces on post are there as part of an advise and assist mission with Jordan.
In a statement, US President Joe Biden said the drone strike that killed three US troops in northeastern Jordan was carried out by Iran-backed radical militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq.
" Today, America's heart is heavy. Last night, three U.S. service members were killed — and many wounded — during an unmanned drone attack on our forces stationed in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border. While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know it was carried out by radical militant groups backed by Iran operating in Syria and Iraq.
Jill and I join the families and friends of our fallen — and Americans across the country — in grieving the loss of these warriors in this despicable and wholly unjust attack ," Biden said.
He concluded the statement by saying that the US will continue its commitment to fight terrorism. This attack, resulting in the loss of American soldiers' lives, could very quickly lead to the escalation of the war in the Middle East.
