Ilir Alimehmeti, another victim of Sali Berisha's survival scenarios...
Despite public superlatives, Sali Berisha has followed an old and tried-and-true scenario: praise in order to hit harder at figures who threaten his throne. This time, the victim is Ilir Alimehmeti, one of the most popular figures among the Democratic Party membership and one of the few with integrity and an independent profile.
After the May 11 elections, Berisha not only did not bring Alimehmet closer, but he hit him four times with methods that only a seasoned autocrat could invent in such a calm and silent way.
The first blow: Withdrawal from Tirana with empty promises
In the 2023 local elections, Berisha asked Alimehmet to withdraw from the race for the Municipality of Tirana, in the name of "DP unity", with the promise that he would be included in the leadership and become an MP. Today, all the promises turned out to be an electoral fraud.
Second Strike: Outside the Presidency, with controlled votes
When the new DP Presidency was formed, Berisha included members who were appointed “ex officio” and selected the rest through a process that Edi Paloka called “with vote theft and displacement of each other.” Alimehmeti was not included. Not from a lack of support, but from the fear that Berisha has of any personality who might rival him.
Third strike: Off the closed list
In the May 11 elections, Ilir Alimehmeti, although the most voted in the Tirana primaries, was left out of the closed list for deputies. In his place, Berisha introduced burned political figures and transferred mandates to weak allies who had never voted for the DP.
The fourth blow: The rejection of the recount in Tirana
After the election results, Alimehmeti requested a recount of the votes. The DP representatives on the CEC, under Berisha’s dictate, rejected the request. The reason? Because “the party should do it, not the candidate.” When Alimehmeti asked for clarification, Berisha publicly said that “the party will do it,” but never did.
In this repeated political scheme, Sali Berisha appears the same as in the past 34 years: a politician who, in order to survive, sacrifices every figure with potential who does not bow to him personally.
As he has done with dozens of other names in the past, from Eduard Selami to Astrit Patozi, Jozefina Topalli, Majlinda Bregu, Genc Ruli and dozens of others, now it is Ilir Alimehmet's turn.
While the DP is sinking into a deep representation crisis, Berisha continues to rule not to build a real opposition, but to not leave the chair that he himself has chained himself to./ Pamphlet
