The Trump-Putin meeting revives the ghosts of Yalta, amid Kiev's warnings and European fears of bargaining over Ukrainian territory...

In August 2025, the world is preparing for a scene reminiscent of the darkness of the Cold War and the bargaining tables of Yalta. US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in Alaska, a territory with a heavy symbolic load, purchased by the US from Russia in 1867, for talks that could define the new boundaries of global power. And contrary to what diplomats claim, this is not just a summit; it is a showdown to decide who will dominate the 21st century.

Officially, the topic is Ukraine. But sources close to the White House are talking about plans that, if implemented, would give Moscow all of Donbas and Crimea in exchange for a "peace" that Zelensky calls dead in the east.

For Kiev, any decision without its presence is not only invalid, but a hostile act that rewards the aggressor.

"We will not give Russia an inch for what it has done," he said in harsh tones, warning that "territorial exchanges" are just an invitation to new war.

Europe is alarmed. The leaders of Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Finland and the European Commission have come out in a united front, recalling the fundamental principle: borders are not changed by force. Macron has made it clear that Europeans cannot be left out of this bargain, because it is their security that is being negotiated. But the real fear is that a quick deal between Washington and Moscow will sideline the continent and restore the division of influence, just as in 1945.

In the background, US Vice President JD Vance is playing the role of “silent ambassador”, holding meetings with British leaders and Zelensky’s closest advisers to defuse tensions. But the message from Kiev is unchanged: lasting peace is only on the table with Ukraine, and a ceasefire is not a new frontier.

This summit in Alaska is much more than a diplomatic meeting. It is a chance for Putin to restore Russia as a superpower to the world table and a test for Trump to show that he can “solve” the biggest war in Europe since 1945. But if the history of Yalta teaches us anything, it is this: when the big ones divide the world with a pencil on a map, the small ones pay the price. And today, Ukraine is at the center of that map. / Pamphlet
