When the state can't maintain order, it invents ghosts. And now the Rama government's newest ghost is called: "Volunteer Police."
No, it's not a joke. It's an official decision of the Council of Ministers. In other words: The State Police has capitulated. There are no more people, no trust, no control over the territory. Now, the government is begging the people to protect themselves.
Anyone with 5 free hours a day and the desire to wear a vest with the police logo can become a "police officer." No academy, no training, no responsibility. All it takes is a letter of intent and a ready face to fill the void of the uniform.
So, criminals are armed with money, citizens are protected with passion. Threats are made with guns, protection with will. And the law? It is enforced by someone who likes to look like a police officer, but is not. It is difficult to get more tragic than that.
This is the Albanian version of "organized self-defense", not by the army, but by good will. A madness that can only be justified by a state that has surrendered to gangs, and that seeks to cover up its failure with folkloric measures.
This decision is a formal act of the government's capitulation in the face of organized crime, which has taken control of territory, votes, and fear. And Rama, instead of strengthening the state, announces the mobilization of citizens against the gangs that he himself has tolerated.
When the police become volunteers, order becomes an illusion. And when hope is all the state offers, then we are in free fall.
