Encirclement of the Open Balkans

Encirclement of the Open Balkans

Now the Balkans are surrounded by the Opening, in order to be freed from the dirt...

Where are we here, in Qafë Thane? The border point between us and Macedonia was opened today, you can pass through only one check, not like before you have to wait for hours. This is the new Thana Neck, you could call it...

The part beyond the border is called Kjafasan; but we Albanians never learned it. We didn't even learn that on the other side of Kapshtica it was called Krystallopigis.

In general, both we Albanians, as well as Greeks or Macedonian Slavs, do not call the names of border areas with our neighbors. I thought that this comes from the long isolation of our country during the dictatorship period, where we neither could nor cared what the name of that rock beyond our border was called. But there is also a connection with ethnic nationalism in the Balkans, a blind power that has harmed all nationalities. This is also related to the fact that even the ethical Albanians of Struga, Tetova or Gostivar did not feel comfortable saying 'Kjafasan', but they also called him 'Qafë Thane'.

'Kjafasan' was made a little more distant by the view that we experienced even after the opening of Albania, that is, after the fall of the communist dictatorship. Two opposite things have made me experience that area with the same 'dissatisfaction':

First, that we barely crossed the border, with difficult and strained controls, often in the rain or in that cold wind that blows at the border point. As soon as we crossed that border point, on the side of the road and even in those oak forests, tanks and Macedonian soldiers were lurking. From the iron of the tank to the military man, they watched the road, that is, they were on the hunt for Albanian passers-by. Someone, suddenly, could be shot in the head to shoot at us who were Albanians, and no one paid us. Why should I not think so, while they were chewing the snow and the hot sun of the area night and day for this?!

The second thing that made me experience the Slavic name 'Kjafasan' with deep 'dissatisfaction' has to do with dissatisfaction with myself, that is, with my country. The Qafë-Thanë or Kjafasan border point seemed from a distance to separate two worlds. The part there, of Macedonia, was cut like a knife. It was cut by tall trees, by a dense forest that made you say: "I'm singing from my place, what ate the forest?" And this was our story, we had deserted the forest.

While now this difference is hardly noticeable. We have come and gone around the world all these three decades, so much so that we have come close to and overcome both our neighbors and the Westerners of Europe.

We fought the dirtiest battles, which have often been called 'heroic battles', on the borders with our neighbors. The communist dictatorship even spent billions of dollars to close the borders with its neighbors; Europe was far away, we had the first isolation with Greece, Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro... This was our pride.

After the 90s, people were killed again at these border points. In the fall of 1995, the biggest riots between the two states were felt here. On the other side, someone had set the trap of a state crime: Macedonian President Kiro Gligorov suddenly found himself under a terrorist attack with explosives in front of a hotel in Skopje. The president was seriously injured, while the driver died. The first finger of accusation was directed towards Qafë Thana with the suspicion that the assassination was carried out by Albanians.

Why is the northern border of Kosovo with Serbia kept under tension? Why do both sides send police and army? Is it for the freedom of peoples? No, not at all...

Kurti cooperates with Serbian criminals and Vulin (Vučič) has the traffic spaces in the Kosovo police. That border area is a crime buffer. The West tends to open it, as an infected wound opens; while Kurti-Vucic keeps it closed, closed like death. At that point, the crime and death of peoples is cultivated. If that border is opened, then the crime of the two governments and mafias in cooperation dies.

Yesterday, when the border in Qafë Thanë-Kjafasan was 'undone', surely even the officials of the north of Kosovo were shocked.

Now the Balkans are surrounded by the Opening, in order to be freed from dirt./ Pamphlet
