When Edi Rama publicly mocked Donald Trump at an international forum, mentioning the “confusion between Albania and Armenia,” he once again sold himself as a master of jokes and a global challenger. But this time, the satire had consequences. The reaction was not long in coming: George Papadopoulos, Trump’s former foreign policy advisor, published a photo of Rama in his office with Charles McGonigal, the former FBI agent who is now convicted in the US for concealing facts and benefiting from dubious connections to Albania.
This seemingly simple photograph is now a visual indictment. It is no longer just an image, but evidence of the relations that the Albanian prime minister had with a figure that American justice has included in the archive of international corruption. And the more Rama tries to sell this meeting as a “friendly conversation about Russian influence,” the more public and international suspicion grows that the truth lies elsewhere.
Why is this photo so important?
Because it is directly linked to an FBI file, which mentions trips, payments and direct influence in Albanian decision-making. Because it mentions attempts to influence the granting of energy licenses. Because it mentions the role of Dorian Duçka, as a link between Rama and the structures that benefit from public businesses. And above all, because it raises serious questions about the integrity of the institution of the prime minister in the eyes of international allies.
When a top FBI agent is convicted of failing to declare relations with a foreign government, and that government is Albania, the risk is not just reputational, it is diplomatic. In Washington, London or Brussels, no one will look the same way at a place where political leaders are photographed in the office with people who are later convicted of international corruption. No amount of jokes can put out this fire.
Today, Rama is forced to respond, not with sarcasm, but with documents. Not with vague denials, but with complete transparency. Because more than mocking Trump, what weighs on his shoulders is the connection with a character who has become a symbol of the dark cooperation between Albanian officials and networks of financial and political interest. And if Albanian justice does not act, at least American justice has given a message: no one is above the law, not even in Tirana.
Albania no longer has the luxury of remaining silent, relativizing, or mocking scandals of this magnitude. At a time when the West sees the Balkans as a battlefield against Russian and Chinese influence, every shady connection is a ticking time bomb.
