The former Minister of Finance Arben Malaj spoke about the economic situation in the country, commenting on the devaluation of the euro and the state of water pipes.
As for the water pipes in the country, Malaj said that there was a mismanagement of them, which according to him was announced earlier by the reports of KLSH.
He said that the Durrës water supply company, now bankrupt, will have to pay the damage using Albanian taxpayers' money, since the guarantee for its loan was given by the state.
Malaj also commented on the devaluation of the European currency, saying that according to experts, such fluctuations are also influenced by factors of the criminal and informal economy.
According to him, this situation is also a test for the government, since if the strengthening of the national currency was a result of positive developments, this will be proven when tourism declines.
" There is a mismanagement, as earlier the KLSH has drawn conclusions about the deterioration of the situation of public water pipes, especially that of Durrës. From studies done in other countries, if the public sector is managed carefully, GDP increases by 2% per year.
In particular, the water supply of Durrës has received loans that will be paid from the taxes of the Albanians. Since their indicators were not good, the guarantee was from the state, which at this moment brings compensation from taxes.
Large public companies have been used for electoral purposes and their financial condition has deteriorated, leading to today's situation. I am fully convinced that these public enterprises are overpopulated with employees for political and nepotistic reasons.
We would all be happy if the devaluation of the euro came from the strengthening of our economy, but experts think that such fluctuations also have factors of the criminal and informal economy. These are also highlighted by international reports, such as that of DASH.
In recent days, a letter has been sent to the IMF and the World Bank to oversee this situation. I believe that they will respond positively and it is a good element that the business has understood their importance.
We need statistics to see the range of fluctuations to determine economic activities. If the strengthening of the national currency was a positive development, it will be seen when tourism declines. This is also a test for the government. Those whose income is in euros are the ones who lose the most, while at the macro level the government benefits as it lowers the cost of debt. The reduction in debt from the devaluation of the euro may make the government less strict in controlling funds. All those who have payments to make in euros benefit.
The government will not dare to make golden passports if it does not get approval from international financial institutions. Albania remains in the gray area for corruption and most European countries have their doubts. We cannot think that spontaneous resources will support our economy in the long term. I believe and appeal that we do not act independently, as we have shared a part of sovereignty with institutions such as the World Bank or the European Union ", he said.
