His name has been circulating in German media these days as Germany's foreign minister, or even in another important portfolio.
Lulzim Basha, yesterday, in a statement about the elections in Germany and congratulations on the CDU's victory, accompanied it with a photo.
In the photo was the future German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, the leader of the CDU and the party's political spokesman for European affairs, Gunther Krichbaum. Basha, it seems, had illustrated his message to infuriate his former boss, whom he knows very well.
His name has been circulating in German media these days as Germany's foreign minister, or even in another important portfolio.
Krichbaum belongs to the Merkel-supporting wing, and in the new CDU leadership, he was the head of this faction. As is tradition in major European parties, when positions are allocated, there is a harmonization agreement between the different lobbies.
Whether or not he will take the post of Foreign Minister will depend on the negotiations, which, as Merz himself said, he intended to conclude before Easter, i.e. the beginning of April.
Usually in Germany, the position of foreign minister has gone to the leader of the second-ranking party in the coalition, but there have also been cases when they have taken the position of finance minister, which is the most important in Germany.
However, what is certain is that Gunther Krichbaum will be the most important man for the foreign policy of the chancellor and the new government.
In October last year, Krichbaum, in an official CDU statement, called for Sali Berisha's removal from the leadership of the Democratic Party.
In an article by Deusche Welle, it is noted that the spokesman for European affairs of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag has reacted sharply to the violent protests recently held in Tirana by supporters of the Democratic Party, describing them as unacceptable for a candidate country for the European Union. In a statement to the media, issued in Berlin, Krichbaum called for the immediate distancing of former Prime Minister Sali Berisha from the violent acts: If Berisha still had any credibility, he would have to distance himself immediately from this type of protest and expel the violent people from the party. "Unfortunately, the suspicion arises that Berisha is further inciting these protests."
In the past, the Democratic Party was known for its European values, but according to Krichbaum, it has increasingly strayed from these principles. He stressed that it is imperative for the DP to be renewed and elect a leader with integrity at its helm, in order to function as a strong and constructive opposition. "A healthy democracy needs a government and a strong opposition," Krichbaum said.
Regarding Berisha's house arrest, Krichbaum stressed that SPAK is an independent and credible institution, created under pressure from the European Union, and that the accusation against Berisha is serious. According to him, in any European Union country, a politician with such accusations would be in detention and not under comfortable house arrest. Krichbaum stressed that "Berisha should not be presented as a victim of a politically motivated process, but should face the accusations against him."
In conclusion, Krichbaum stated that the coming days will be crucial to see whether the Democratic Party will have the necessary strength to renew itself and regain the trust of Albanian citizens and international partners.
After this bombshell statement from Berlin, which completely nailed Sali Berisha and his tales of lifting the isolation, the latter savagely attacked the CDU's number one man for Europe.
Berisha said verbatim: "Deputy Krichbaum has been presented as the shame of a deputy, as the shame of the institution he represents. Deputy Krichbaum, in a public deception before Albanians, has defended the action without the authorization of the parliament, the party's SKAP and its judge."
"This is an unworthy act, this is the deception of a man, paid or unpaid, but who shames himself first and foremost."
A statement that has made the leader of the Democratic Party of Albania an enemy of the German CDU, which is preparing to make Gunther Krichbaum an important minister.
