It is true that the new sovereignist winds blowing in Europe could shake this process and stop enlargement in the Balkans, as much as they could cause it to happen.
Albania today opened the second set of chapters on the internal market in the framework of the process of opening negotiations with the European Union, which constitutes a record time in terms of the pace at which it is fulfilling its technical obligations to the European Union.
Edi Rama's pledge that Albania will complete this obligation in 2027 is a very ambitious Albanian commitment, which, if realized, shows the seriousness of the Albanian side in this process.
Then, membership is also a political issue and is not only related to fulfilling obligations, but also to the European Union's enlargement policy.
The Eurosceptic battle of the Albanian opposition for Albania's objective in the European Union is the least meaningful thing an opposition can do in relation to Albania's political orientation, as it tries to do politics not with our obligations, but with the conjunctures of the European Union - and this is a necessary condition for becoming a member. But it is not sufficient.
Albania's obligation to join the EU ends with the completion of negotiations and the opening of all chapters to be negotiated. The obligation of the European Union to make us a member state, of course, does not depend only on this necessary condition.
It is true that the new sovereignist winds blowing in Europe could shake this process and stop enlargement in the Balkans, as much as they could cause it to happen.
One such is the Ukraine crisis with Russia.
If the negotiations end in Ukraine's disfavor, with Russia retaining the occupied lands, and if Ukraine is granted membership in the European Union as compensation, then there is no way that at least Albania and Montenegro cannot be accepted. But for this to happen, we must be ready with our obligations. So, for the same political reasons that Europe may hold back and not expand, for the same reasons from Russia's supporters of Europe and the US, Albania may benefit.
But even if neither happens, this is a matter for Europe and not for Albania. Albania must do its duty to Europe. What happens to Europe is not in Albania's hands.
So the fight against the rhetoric of the Albanian government in this campaign for a “European passport” is unproductive. I don’t think the socialists are winning votes because they are telling Albanians “we are going to enter Europe,” but of course they are not depressing them. They are simply strengthening Albania’s pro-Western consciousness.
The opposition, with the "sovereignist" course it chooses from time to time according to Berisha's needs, and with Putin's advisors in the electoral campaign, would be honest to compete with the government by openly saying "no" to membership in the European Union, since if we are to take their current policy seriously, it is anti-European.
And this request that Edi Rama not campaign on membership in Europe because Europe does not accept us, is like crying out for Edi Rama and not for Europe. Either let Edi Rama fail while seeking to enter Europe, or make Edi Rama fail to enter us in Europe. The latter is more manly and suits the Kremlin man, condemned as such in the US, whom Berisha has called to be his campaign mentor.
