The truth behind the German legend of EU blockage

The German ambassador has openly shown who he is with in this debate, he was with SPAK. This is not a mystery, but Germany is not blocking Albania's membership.

The German legend of Albania's blocking in the EU has been circulating in our political region for some time, taking advantage of, or more precisely, misusing, the very democratic role of official Berlin in relation to Albania.

Germany, the strongest political and economic factor in the EU, is also a strong supporter of Albania's integration into the EU, but also of the region, an important supporter of Albanians in Kosovo and in all areas where it is located.

Berlin is the architect and supporter of justice reform in Albania, it is the initiator of the Berlin process, which is not a bureaucratic rudiment, but a typical European geopolitical process, which has the objective of bringing the entire Western Balkans, including Serbia, into the EU.

Both the CDU and the German Social Democrats have almost a policy on Albania, but on the other hand, Berlin has chosen to be open and generous to critical opposition voices in Albania.

Germany has supported the most strongly of all projects to decommunize Albania, through the publication of evidence of the dictatorship's violence. Prestigious German foundations such as Adenauer and Fridich Hebert have helped leftists and rightists in Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, etc., to promote democracy, free initiatives, competition and, of course, decommunization.

The Germans are real supporters of the essential infrastructure of Albanian cities, having financed the energy interconnection of the entire country, as well as with Kosovo and North Macedonia.

This German support is not simply a human solidarity, which they have shown, but a clear political objective that has been stated by Angela Merkel, Olaf Schols, or even Friedrich Merz today.

If Germany did not have the political will for Albania to move forward in the accession process, Tirana would not be able to take a single step forward. Berlin is the basic political factor of a united Europe. It is no coincidence that it has control over the Commission, the European Parliament, and beyond, since after all, it is also the most important financial contributor and the political, and today also geopolitical, locomotive of a new continent that is taking shape.

However, it is a fact that Germany is not a chancellor who is politically tempted; it has made it clear that it wants to support critical, oppositional, and diverse voices in Albania, and it has done so openly, as it considers it a logic within its values.

Regarding the German CDU, the most important party in Germany has generally been supportive, but of real causes, not the idiocies produced by a psychopharmaceutical agenda. When Germany has wanted to say something, it has not had a problem, because its political communication is calm but uncomplicated.

In the case of Albania, Germany has openly stated that it strongly supports SPAK, being critical of the Albanian government and Edi Rama, when there have been controversies. The German ambassador has openly shown who he is with in this debate, he has been with SPAK. This is not a mystery, but Germany is not blocking Albania's membership. Official Berlin has clearly stated this.

However, circles close to Berisha have continued this narrative even though the European Commission, led by an important German like Ursula von Der Leyen, a senior CDU politician, has given the green light for the IBAR report on Albania.

This whole German legend started in July of last year, when a German MEP spoke in Brussels about what Sali Berisha said to him.

The MEP is a doctor like ours, his name is Alexander and his surname is Sell. He comes from Mainz, the capital of the legendary and wealthy state of the Palatinate.

Dr. Sell declared in July 2025 that "Albania does not meet the democratic conditions at all to become part of the EU". The May 11 elections had very little to do with democracy. Prime Minister Rama imprisoned political opponents, international observers spoke of massive vote buying, and TikTok was also shut down during the campaign. Freedom of the press is almost non-existent.

He even went to the extreme when he said that Albania is the Colombia of Europe. In a word, copy&paste.

But Dr. Sandri has a "problem" of course, political. He is an MEP for the famous Alternative for Germany (AFD).

Ultimately, it is not a problem since the AfD is one of the relevant German political forces, although there is a will not to bring it closer, from the big parties such as the CDU, SPD or the Greens. The reasons are that the AfD is anti-EU and pro-Putin. Or at least these are the arguments given by the mainstream forces.

The problem here is not at all why AFD has positions close to or almost identical to Sali Berisha, as AFD is also a party that could one day come to power, just as Giorgia Meloni came to power in Italy.

However, the DP's political ally is the CDU of Merz and Von der Leyen, not the AFD, which is politically an opponent or rival. Merz has said it bluntly; better with the SPD and the left (the Greens or even the Linke) than with the AFD.
