The tragedy of our era is that we have begun to suspect that experiences are small if they are not shared.
When life turns into an audition that must be staged, when it must necessarily appear refined, always under the right lighting, it is no longer enough to feel happiness, joy, sadness, calmness, need, boredom, presence, you must present all these sensations with evidence.
I don't remember exactly when privacy became something that needed to be translated, but I suspect it coincided with the moment when we began to confuse the experience of moments with their documentation. In fact, we not only confused them, we mixed them. Every experience now requires an audience, or at least, a camera roll. It's no longer enough to be happy; we have to appear happy even in the most curated light. It's not enough to be in pain, we have to cry in public.
It is not enough to suffer from a breakup, you need to explain how devastated you are. It is no longer enough to feel complete next to your loved one, you need photos next to each other. To make matters worse, the more visible the joy, happiness, pain, sadness, anger, boredom, or any experience, the more responsible we become for their continuation. The smile posted on Wednesday afternoon must return on Friday. Tearful eyes a month ago must be like that, perhaps even more watery a month later.
The tragedy of our age is that we have begun to suspect that experiences are small if not shared. Whereas real experiences, deep to the bone, are messy, very unstructured, rarely photographed well. They do not fit into frames or translate into captions. Experiences in their most powerful form are not aesthetics, they are states. They do not require applause. Not even continuity. They simply arrive, then fade away.
But what's worse, as this photo shows, the need for chronic visibility is accompanied by surveillance that comes not as a threat, but as an invitation: Share your moments, whatever experiences they may be, with us. Let us in. Be vulnerable. Be known.
That's enough for life to turn into just a performance for the crowd!
