As an agent of the Soviet KGB, Vladimir Putin is a specialist in simulation, servility, flattery. He does this to those who are more powerful than him. To the Chinese leader, for example. And especially to Donald Trump. To him, the Russian dictator behaves like a masseur of the American president's ego.
The latest example, reported by the conservative German newspaper “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” (FAZ) in today’s issue: Trump said that Putin had accepted the invitation to be a member of the so-called “Peace Board”. In fact, Putin did not accept the invitation, but only authorized his subordinates to consider it. And he thanked Trump. After the praise, Putin, like a skillful fisherman, threw Trump a bait: he said that he would donate $1 billion to the “Peace Board”. He proposed that this money be taken from Russian funds blocked in the US by the previous administration, that is, by the government of Joe Biden.
FAZ writes: “After the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, four to five billion dollars of Russian Central Bank reserves were frozen in the US; this is only a small part of the total of $280 billion that was frozen at that time, more than two-thirds of which were in Belgium. According to the G7 decision, this situation should remain so until Russia compensates Kiev for the damage caused. So Putin is proposing to Trump a misuse of funds. Russia, contrary to what Putin claimed, currently does not have access to these funds. His goal is to tempt Trump to break away from its (European) partners on another issue of principle.”
Putin was also generous when it came to Greenland. He said that Denmark had behaved badly, even brutally, towards the island and presented a figure for which the US could buy Greenland (“somewhere around a billion dollars, although the US would probably pay even more”).
This is the tried and tested Soviet school of policy-making. In a world of fiction, a novel could be written with the title: “The Kremlin Masseur.” Sometimes novels are written by reality.
