The Epstein files, the mystery that has shocked the world, is not unknown, it is unpleasant.
The "global pedophilia network" set up by Epstein operated for so long not because it was secret, it flourished because it was useful to powerful and wealthy people, efficient for the institutions they ran, acceptable to the system which is built to reward silence over the truth.
The wealthy man with important connections in banking, government, and the judiciary trafficked and sexually abused hundreds of underage girls, but he didn't do it secretly. Law enforcement knew it, prosecutors knew it, financial institutions knew it, social circles knew it, and at every turn, "the system" chose history management over accountability.
When he was first charged, the justice system turned a blind eye. Then nodded. Later, it gave him a plea deal so generous that the reduced charges should have come with a fruit basket, champagne, and chocolate-covered strawberries. The sex trafficking of a 14-year-old was reduced to simple prostitution. Discharge from job; Immunity for unidentified accomplices.
There was no mystery there, it was all politics. Epstein didn't find protection in obscurity, he found protection in procedure; in a broken justice system that presents plea bargains as efficiency; in jurisdictional dispersion, in big, expensive law firms; in the acceptance that some problems are better managed than solved.
So for years, nothing happened despite credible allegations, witnesses, and documentation.
Epstein hid nothing, he circulated planes, parties, professors, presidents, princes, and prosecutors. He told us about the existence of a new class, the "Epstein Class" where there is a Lawrence Summers, a Steve Bannon, a Deepak Chopra, a scientist skeptical of everything spiritual, a Peter Thiel, a Noam Chomsky, where diversity masks a deep solidarity. These people, although different and often seemingly opposed, belong to the same team.
So Epstein moved openly, confidently, supported by the two forces that produce the power of his class: extreme wealth and blackmail.
Epstein, a dangerous but by no means hidden man, violently exposed us to a truth we would never want to face: The political and economic system that has been built traps criminals in its cracks and is designed to protect them at all costs.
