This gap between high public interest and the deliberate deafness of justice and politics to uncover those responsible for the macabre murder of four unarmed people by the state of the time is among the most striking contrasts that the Albanian transition has produced in 35 years.
Yesterday, former President Ilir Meta offered to provide information about the January 21 event, which, according to his lawyer, includes information he received on the eve of the opposition protest from foreign sources. Meta claims that foreign services told him that the protest would be violent and that the scenario of murders was not excluded. It is the first time that the former president has said something like this. He did not say it at the moment he resigned from his position as minister, nor when the murders occurred, nor later when the right-wing majority launched an investigation into what was called the January 21 coup.
For one of the protagonists already in prison for the January 21 massacre to come out after 15 years and offer himself for "new information" regarding the event, this is a fact that sounds more like a blow with its own effect to attract public attention from the isolation where he is, than as a new contribution to the thick file of murders on the boulevard. The January 21 tragedy is one of the most mediatized, most discussed, debated and analyzed events. Just as it is one of the least investigated events.
This gap between high public interest and the deliberate deafness of justice and politics to uncover those responsible for the macabre murder of four unarmed people by the state of the time is among the most striking contrasts that the Albanian transition has produced in 35 years.
The new judiciary, SPAK to be precise, has become an example of this deafness today, which initially refused to take over the investigation into the new evidence for January 21, and then launched a "slow-paced" investigation, with no end in sight. The dragging out of this file puts the new judiciary in the same shameful niche as the poplar judiciary, which de facto blocked the finding of those responsible for January 21.
In this midst, the introduction of Ilir Meta's "sketch" only brings back to the scene once again the hypocrisy of the January 21 rulers who, even today, continue to chew on arguments that they themselves do not believe, such as these scenarios involving murder and foreign services.
There is a nerve revealed on January 21, when it comes to indirectly understanding who is responsible for the murders on the boulevard. A few hours after the event, the ruling majority of the time, under Berisha's screams about the coup, diligently engages in the investigation of the event. The main goal: to find the roots of the coup, the authors, instigators, screenwriters, directors and actors along with the most insignificant extras. In a word, to reveal to the Albanians the plot that was prepared, the dynamite cars in Rinia Park, the pistol umbrellas, the poisoned knives and of course a handful of putschist journalists on the side, to make the Doctor's comical theorem even more credible.
This commission worked for two years, questioning the entire state hierarchy, minus the "Villain President" and the "Prosecutor-Whore". Berisha, Topalli, Basha and a dozen other high-ranking officials were included in the commission. After the first year of the investigation, in 2021, the commission in question had its mandate extended for another year. Weeks and months passed and that office with MPs, all lawyers and some even former ministers of justice, did not filter anything new. Fees were taken to uncover the coup, but the coup was nowhere to be seen. Meanwhile, political rhetoric was in full swing and accusations were exchanged from one side to the other.
However, at the end of two years, this handful of men full of knowledge of jurisprudence and with business cards to envy, could not accomplish anything. Not a single report on the findings of the commission was read on the podium of the Assembly, a unique case since '91. The deputies who for two years received money to uncover the high-profile conspiracy against the state, did not even deign to return the fees for the missing work.
The emptiness of the parliamentary investigation into the January 21 coup is the exposed nerve of January 21. Anyone who thinks that the Democrats gathered information and found facts about the opposition's responsibility in the murders of that day and did not publish them in the years that followed is simply lying to themselves. Not others.
The 2013 elections came and the coup was forgotten. Only Berisha remembered it, who has the trouble of keeping this word alive as a mechanical justification, whenever journalists ask him. Even Edi Rama and his people forgot about January 21, and apparently, since it is a contagious disease, he tried to pretend that SPAKU had forgotten that story too years later.
Everyone took their hands off the still hot potato of January 21, which not even Ilir Meta can pull out of the fire with the sudden memories that came to him in prison about that fateful day, when the state killed its own citizens and no one was punished. Shame on all those who could and still can, but do not!
