Two Albanian brothers, internationally wanted for years, have been arrested in Italy as part of a joint operation between Albanian and Italian authorities. They are Artur and Arben Mehilli , convicted of murder and who had escaped justice for more than two decades.
Their arrest was made possible thanks to the exchange of information in real time through Interpol Tirana and Interpol Rome, as well as the use of biometric "Facial Recognition" technology, which helped to reveal their real identities.
The operation involved the structures of the Criminal Police, the General Prosecutor's Office and the Fier Police, in cooperation with the Italian authorities.
After committing the crime, the two brothers fled to Italy, where they lived for years under false identities. Artur Mehilli used the name Artur Davidhi, while Arben Mehilli registered as Arben Gjermeni, and managed to obtain residence permits.
Artur and Arben Mehilli were sentenced by the Lushnja Court in 2001 to a total of 32 years in prison for "premeditated murder" in collaboration and illegal possession of weapons.
The event dates back to September 12, 1999 in Lushnja, where they executed the RM citizen with a firearm, in an act that, according to investigations, was related to a blood feud, after the victim had killed their brother in 1997.
Albanian authorities have initiated procedures for the extradition of the two arrested, who are expected to be transferred to Albania to serve the sentence imposed by the court.

The brothers, sentenced to 32 years in prison, had obtained residence permits in Italy using false identities.
Their identification is the result of the use of "Facial Recognition" technology, now available to Interpol Tirana.
As part of successive international operations, finalized as a result of the cooperation and trust of the State Police structures towards their European counterparts and partners, the Criminal Police Department at the DPSSh, in cooperation with the General Prosecutor's Office and the Fier Local Police Directorate, provided information on the location in Italy of the two brothers convicted of murder.
The information was exchanged between Interpol Tirana and Interpol Rome, with the coordination of the Interpol General Secretariat.
As a result, citizens Artur Mehilli, 60 years old, and Arben Mehilli, 54 years old, were arrested in Italy.
They were declared internationally wanted after the Court of the Lushnja Judicial District, in 2001, convicted them of the criminal offenses of "Premeditated Murder", committed in collaboration, and "Unlicensed Possession and Production of Weapons, Explosive Weapons and Ammunition", specifically:
