The Ecuadorian authorities in cooperation with the Spanish authorities have launched an operation against the Albanian mafia. According to the local media , after 2 and a half years of investigations, it was possible to hit the organization led by the Albanian Dritan Gjika from Shkodra, connected to Ruben Cherres, a friend of the brother-in-law of the former president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso.
During the early hours of this morning, 57 checks were carried out in Ecuador and Spain as part of the "Pampa" and "Gran Fenix 13" operations. In Ecuador, interventions were made in Guayas, El Oro, Santa Elena, Cotopaxi, Pichincha and Azuay, while in Spain in Barcelona, Málaga, Marbella and Valencia. In total, 30 people were arrested, 12 of them in Spain. Those arrested are Ecuadorian, Spanish, Argentine, Colombian and Chinese.
They are suspected of 11 incidents where 2.3 tons of cocaine were seized in Ecuador and various European countries. During the operation in Spain, 450 thousand euros, dollars, 10 weapons, 25 vehicles, 22 properties, watches and mobile phones were seized. According to local media, the boss of the group was Dritan Gjika, who entered Ecuador in November 2009.
According to the investigations, Dritan Gjika was the head of this organization, which was in charge of the orders near the cocaine production laboratories in Colombia, until the coordination of the sale in Europe.
Dritan Gjika has been investigated by the police for years. His name came up in the León de Troya case, which involves Danilo Carrera, the brother-in-law of President Lasso, who allegedly managed public offices, with the collaboration of his friend Rubén Cherres. The latter already executed.
There was no more frequent name in the circle of Rubén Cherres than that of Dritan Gjika. The Albanian from Shkodra appears as a big businessman in the company's documents, which show the long business relationship that exists between Cherres and Gjika, Ecuadorian media write. But Gjika extends relations in his hometown with a company investigated for drug trafficking.
His partner Cherres has become the center of acquaintances that reach the closest environment of the Ecuadorian president, Guillermo Lasso. Earlier, in the scheme published by the Ecuadorian media, it was revealed how 4 members of the Albanian gang led by Dritan Gjika, in collaboration with Ruben Cherres, one of the cocaine bosses, had exerted influence to obtain high positions in the ministry. Cherres and Gjika founded 13 companies, most of them construction and real estate, eight of which were created in a single day. These firms have been monitored by the Companies Watch for non-compliance with anti-money laundering regulations. No company has paid taxes.
