It was a night of violence that led to the daring escape of 40 inmates from one of the nation's main immigration detention centers.
The April 2023 explosion from Yarl's Wood in Bedfordshire exposed not only the vulnerability of the facility itself, but also shed light on the massive drug and people smuggling network created by Albanian mafia-style gangs across the country.
It was undeniable proof that the fugitives were part of a much larger criminal network, eager not only to help them evade capture, but to welcome them back with open arms.
Generating a large part of the gangs' profits are industrial-scale cannabis farms, whose produce continues to be sold across the country - a market worth around £2.4 billion.
Farms are often based in rented houses, disused industrial buildings and even abandoned roadside shops, with crops capable of generating more than £2 million at a time.
Gangs that once specialized in cocaine have turned in recent years to lower-risk cannabis, taking the market from the Vietnamese.
“At the bottom of the chain is a gardener, who lives in the factory - their full-time job is farming cannabis. And at the top of the chain are the people who actually run the business.
It's not uncommon to have factories growing a thousand plants at a time, so if you have an OCG doing multiple grows, they can produce many millions of pounds a year."
Albanian fugitives connected with gang networks established throughout the country to find safety. Police raided many of the properties linked to the Albanian drug trade, in an effort to find the fugitives, and discovered industrial-scale cannabis farms.
All signs point to the involvement of organized Albanian cannabis gangs.
Searches at properties that have been linked to the cannabis trade in the past have revealed grow rooms filled with several kilograms of plants. Complete with specialist lighting and ventilation, these are designed to maximize production - and maximize profit.
But despite the discovery, none of the wanted was found in the house.
The police were looking for the fugitives, until, surprisingly, one of the fugitives surrenders at Bedford police station.
During police questioning, Thanas Bizhoti claimed that the escape was unplanned. He also reveals that he was asked by his friends to surrender.

The vast majority of these illegal immigrants faced the English Channel in the small boats that have proved such a disaster for the government. TikToks and Instagram stories posted by the migrants have shown them smiling and waving as they film themselves huddled side by side on a boat.
Advertisements for the trip are posted online by people smugglers, often with a casualness that hides what is, in reality, human trafficking.
"We have a trip from France to England on a speedboat," says one such ad.
However, despite barely being a 20-mile journey across the water, the price for which the trip is being offered is £9,000 - and that's just for one person.
While these young people risk arrest and deportation to the UK, many are also fleeing a criminal underworld in Albania.
One of the escapees, Mariglen Coha, says that his father was shot with thirty bullets. Mariglen himself paid a staggering - but not unusual - £24,000 to be transported to this country.
Locals in his home town reveal the threat he would face if deported by the UK Border Force.
Once here, that debt has not disappeared. The reality for many of those young Albanians is that they get stuck growing cannabis, paying off that debt.
"If the police catch it and turn it back, you have no chance of getting that money back," says one. "He will be killed or go to jail because he has no money," added another.
Great Britain remains an attractive destination for the simple fact that there is already an established Albanian community here - and established networks of gangs that can provide easy work.
Other social media ads tout the prospect of a glamorous life full of flashy cars, designer clothes and expensive champagne.
And the advertised life is often accessible only to those at the top of the food chain.
"They see young people their age with Mercedes, while they don't even have a bicycle," says a food seller in Albania.
