An Albanian man has been sentenced to 5 years in prison in the United Kingdom, following an investigation conducted by Thames Valley Police regarding a serious accident and insurance fraud in the city of Oxford.
Besjan Karaj, 27, of Field Avenue, Oxford, was sentenced on Friday (September 26) at Oxford High Court. In addition to the prison sentence, he was banned from driving for five and a half years and will have to pass an advanced driving test to regain his licence.
Karaj pleaded guilty to one count of causing injury by dangerous driving and another of fraud by false representation to an insurance company.
On July 13 last year, Karaj was driving his car on the B4017 when he swerved into the opposite lane at high speed on a bend and collided with a 22-year-old motorcyclist. He fled the scene without stopping, leaving the victim seriously injured.
Police, upon arriving at the scene, were able to reconstruct the event through the remaining pieces of the vehicle, including the license plate and the car's logo, which led to the identification of the vehicle - which was found just a mile away, in flames.
Through cellphone records, investigators placed Karaj as present at the scene of the accident and also near where the car burned. Later, when the victim sought compensation from the insurance company, Karaj admitted to being the driver of the vehicle, but attempted to blame the motorcyclist for the accident. He was arrested on January 2 of this year and charged the following day.
Detective Inspector PC Matthew Stansfield from the Road Policing Unit said: “I am delighted that Karaj has been found guilty and has received a prison sentence. This is evidence that we will work tirelessly to uncover the truth and bring justice to the victims. This decision shows that no one is above the law, especially those who put the lives of others at risk on the roads.
