Jealousy appears to be behind the murder of a 50-year-old man in Aitoloakarnania, Greece, by a 44-year-old Albanian.
The 44-year-old is suspected of ambushing the victim and shooting him multiple times, resulting in his fatal injury. Authorities are investigating the possibility that the two men had agreed to meet at the scene, and according to the findings, the victim, who was the village headman, had a shotgun in his car.
There had been a clash between them over the past year, with residents of the area reporting that there had been a lot of tension and arguments.
According to testimony, in the early hours of Saturday, the victim was in a cafe in the area when he saw the perpetrator's vehicle pass in front of him, moving towards the Agios Andreas area.
He allegedly followed her in his vehicle, although it is still unclear what exactly happened at that moment.
"The vehicle was shot three times. Once from the front and twice from the back," Mesarista president Konstantinos Daskalis told agrinionews.gr.
Local residents say they are shocked. "We were shocked, and so was the whole village. We don't know if they had any disagreements. We knew them, they were both good guys," said one resident. A romantic relationship between the perpetrator and the victim's wife is suspected.
"It's been a year since he and his wife separated. But then they reunited and the woman returned to her husband and child. I don't know what happened after that. They argued, and they even had two rifles. They told them not to shoot each other, but it's been a year since then," said another resident, as reported by Agriniopress.
