A 91-year-old detainee has passed away at the University Hospital Center in Tirana, where he had been hospitalized due to his serious health condition.
Citizen Medat Spahiu lost his life at around 2:10 PM on April 3, 2026 in the Central Intensive Care Unit. Doctors determined the cause to be a pulmonary embolism on the right side.
He was arrested on March 14 for attempted murder in domestic circumstances. Three days later, he was sent to the prison in Durres, but due to his health condition, he remained under medical care at the city's regional hospital.
On March 19, authorities transferred him to the “Shefqet Ndroqi” hospital in Tirana, where he received treatment in the pneumology ward. A few days later, on March 31, he was released from this hospital and admitted to the QSUT.
His condition deteriorated further and on the evening of April 2, he was urgently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Doctors found several underlying health problems, including hypertension, diabetes, the consequences of a cerebral stroke, and a fractured hip.
Authorities have initiated procedures for the case and have notified the deceased's family.
