The drug lord's lawyer's failure to notify him of questioning in a Rome court almost got his client out of jail.
It is about the boss of one of the drug cartels, Ardian Sufaj, involved in cocaine trafficking from South America to the port of Genoa.
However, before he was released from Rebibbia prison, DDA deputy prosecutor Federico Manotti managed to keep Ardian Sufaj, 40, in a cell with a detention order.
"There are serious indications of guilt and it is necessary to avoid release before the suspect loses his tracks", writes the prosecutor in his request. The arrest will be opposed by Sufaj's defenders, lawyers Nicola Giribaldi and Riccardo Caramello, who said they will make the request in the coming days as according to them there is no risk of escape.
Ndaj Sufajt, considered a dangerous individual by the District Antimafia Directorate, issued an international arrest warrant in May 2023 because he fled to Albania when his gang disbanded. The police in the city of eagles managed to arrest him after a few weeks, but it was several months before they extradited him and took him to Rome.
In Italy, at the time of the preliminary interrogation scheduled for February 15, before one of the judges of the preliminary investigation of the capital, however, a formal error was made. Due to an IT failure, the investigating judge's registry did not send the certified email informing Sufaj's defense attorney, attorney Giribaldi, of the interrogation. And so the suspect was assigned a court-appointed attorney. As soon as the defender noticed the mess, he immediately requested the invalidity of the arrest warrant. But moments before the drug trafficker was set free, Manotti arrived and held him in a cell.
According to the District Antimafia Directorate, it was Sufaj who kidnapped an employee of the University of Pisa, his friend and collaborator, a kidnapping that took place at the end of 2022 in the Marina of Sestri Ponente, and which included only one epilogue: the death of hostages, to teach a lesson to those who had stolen the cocaine (about one hundred kilograms) that the gang was waiting for in the port of Genoa from Ecuador.
For this reason, the members of the cartel had asked the university employee to introduce them to an employee, who in exchange for the amount of money (two hundred thousand euros only for the first load) would take the narcotics out of the terminal. However, instead of a real accomplice, the accomplice had introduced him to a financier acting undercover on behalf of the DDA. Infiltrated soldier codename: Gian. For the investigators, after the "hired" blunder, Sufaj's intentions were obvious and he left interceptions to prove it.
The boss had given concrete orders to his subordinates, after the boy they had introduced to take the drugs out of the port had disappeared. The boss wanted the port worker's home address and had told another gang member to go to Pisa to pick up the university student, as he now considered him a traitor. "Take him to Genoa", he ordered. And so he did. The hostage was saved only thanks to the fact that the DDA did not leave him alone.
