The Prosecutor's Office of Puka has requested 8 years in prison for Davide Pecorelli, the Italian who staged his death in Albania in January 2021.
This request of the Albanian authorities has received the attention of the Italian media, which consider the request harsh for the entrepreneur, despite the fact that the latter had chosen the shortened trial.
He is charged with fraud, grave abuse, obstruction of justice, arson and illegal border crossing.
As 'Il Messaggero' writes, the Prosecutor's Office of Puka has requested the extradition of Pecorelli, which has been accepted by the General Prosecutor's Office in Perugia. But the final decision will be taken on May 28 at the Court of Appeal.
The media write that there were some postponements in the trial after Pecorelli's Albanian lawyer communicated in Italy about the possibility of a guilty plea, which would avoid prison for the entrepreneur. However, these hours are hours of anxiety and concern for Pecorelli's future. At the end of the month, a hearing is expected to be held where the defense of the Italian will have its say. According to the media, the possibility of his lawyer being supported by an Italian lawyer from the consulate in Albania is not excluded.
As "Il Mesaggero" writes, Pecorelli's story is tragicomic. He was imprisoned in 2022 after faking his own death. When questioned, he said that everything had started as a result of money problems.
"I had two companies, a hair salon and a beauty center. Workers and suppliers started chasing me after I couldn't pay them anymore. My business "Parukeri Milano", where I also sold shampoo, conditioners, gel, or hair spray went bankrupt as a result of Covid-19", he said.
And here, always according to Pecorelli's testimony, he thought to find the solution in Albania where he could put his wealth.
"I had heard that you can make money there. I got myself into the laser hair removal business, but it wasn't worth it. I went into depression, I was depressed, I gained 20 kilos. I was also thinking about how to take my own life", he said.
So far everything seems real, but later it starts to take the form of surrealism.
"I met a priest who suggested a way out of this state of misery, pretending to die in a road accident. I rented a Skoda Fabia. On January 6, 2021, we doused it with gasoline and set it on fire in Shkodër. "To make the accident seem real, I threw away the watch, the mobile phone and some bones that the priest had brought me," said Pecorelli.
Then he went to Medjugorje, to a small community.
"The head of the community offered me a small job, namely to track down a treasure trove of coins in Italy. He showed me some maps for three chests and told me that we could share them for half, about half a ton of coins," Pecorelli confessed.
But during the checks, he was stopped aboard a dinghy not far from the island of Montecristo. As he himself admits, at that moment he had shovels, bags and a pickaxe with him. He no longer held the truth there.
"I am Davide Pecorelli, I am not dead as everyone thinks," he said.
For this reason, including a false document that he showed in a hotel, he was sentenced to 1 year in prison which was converted to 12 months of community service by a court in Italy.
