Prosecutor Merita Selimi, who was on Laert Haxhiu's hit list, has been reinstated after successfully passing the vetting process following an appeal. She had investigated Haxhiu for the 2017 massacre and has been under physical police protection since October 2023.
Lushnja Prosecutor, Merita Selimi, who was on Laert Haxhiu's list to be killed, has passed the "Vetting", re-entering the prosecution system.
On July 27, 2023, Selimi was dismissed from the Independent Qualification Commission, but after an appeal was filed with the Special Appeals Commission, the latter's panel decided by a majority vote that Merita Selimi be reinstated.
Merita Selimi began her career in the justice system in 1992 and has worked at the Lushnja Prosecutor's Office since then. Most recently, after the configuration of the new judicial map, she served at the Fier Prosecutor's Office.
In October 2023, prosecutor Selimi was taken under physical protection by the Lushnja police station, after testimony from SPAK prosecutor's associate, Artan Tafani, showed that she and two other names from the Albanian judiciary were on the list of people that life-sentenced Laert Haxhiu wanted to kill.
Selimi was the prosecutor who investigated Laert Haxhiu, Orgest Bilbil and Anterio Kaloshi for the 2017 massacre, where Zamir Latifi and Jurgen Hoxha were killed, while Bujar Turku and Marjus Xhepexhiu were injured.
After two years of investigation, Selimi decided to declare the Lushnja prosecution incompetent, transferring the file against the three defendants to SPAK, where the court sentenced the three people to life imprisonment./ OraNews
