New details have emerged from the Guardia di Finanza (Italian Financial Police) operation that dismantled an Albanian cocaine trafficking gang, headquartered in Foligno, from Albania to the neighboring country and beyond.

Seven people were arrested, including five Albanians, one was placed under house arrest, and three others are still wanted.

The operation resulted in the seizure of 68 kilograms of cocaine and a car with a fake tailgate. The narcotics were intended for the domestic market, mainly restaurants and bars.

Among those arrested was an Albanian businessman in Italy, who co-owned the restaurant with an Italian, also arrested some time ago. The operation is a follow-up to investigations from 2024.

It is learned that the packages of cocaine were packaged with luxury brands "Lacoste" and "Ferrari".

"Five of the suspects are citizens of Albanian origin, three of whom reside in the province of Perugia; one is Italian and the other is of Romanian origin, two of whom also reside in the province," authorities said.

Hitting the organization required surveillance, wiretapping, decryption of encrypted phones, and even the deployment of satellites for localization.

"The investigation, launched in 2024 by the Azerbaijani Government Section of the GICO of the Economic and Financial Police Unit according to a statement signed by Prosecutor Raffaele Cantone based on the investigative findings of another criminal case, was carried out through telephone interceptions and environmental surveillance, as well as the use of satellite location systems. These, combined with more traditional surveillance, observation and tracking services, have revealed serious evidence of the operation in the Perugia area of a pyramid scheme led by an Albanian citizen, who coordinated and managed the procurement and distribution of significant quantities of narcotics (cocaine) in Umbria from Albania," informs the media of the neighboring country.

The ring's chief promoter relied on the help of his wife, a partner in a restaurant business in Foligno, as well as two other associates, an Albanian and an Italian. It was believed that the business was simply used as a "front" for reinvesting the proceeds from illegal trafficking.

The individuals under investigation also commonly used instant messaging systems available online (FaceTime, Snapchat, Signal, etc.), walkie-talkie radios, and sophisticated technology.
