Albania has another solid stone in its hand for the extradition from Turkey of the cocaine traffic boss Dritan Rexhepi, after the Constitutional Court finally upheld his sentence of 25 years in prison.
The decision given on December 11, 2023, is related to the guilt of the 43-year-old for the murder of the policeman Durim Kasmi in 1999 in the center of Kruja and the wounding of Ramazan Baki, resulting in his death a few days later.
On November 22, our country forwarded to Turkey the request for the extradition of Dritan Rexhepi, after his arrest in Istanbul on November 10, 2023. In addition to Albania, Italian justice is also competing for the extradition of Dritan Rexhepi, after the Florence court has sentenced him to 20 years in prison for the charge of trafficking cocaine from Ecuador to the neighboring country. In this way, the most severe punishment for the character considered as the boss of the international traffic of cocaine, turns out to have been given by Albania.
However, it will be the Turkish authorities that will examine the requests for extradition and will determine the country to which they will hand over the most wanted.
The decision of December 11, 2023 of the Constitutional Court, which leaves in force the 25-year prison sentence against Gramoz Rexhepi, came after a long ordeal that has passed all levels of the Albanian judiciary. The defendant, who was tried in absentia after escaping from the Durrës police in 2007 and lost track of him, was initially sentenced to life imprisonment on February 20, 2009, but as a result of an appeal by the lawyers, the case was returned for a retrial.
After re-examining the file, the court of serious crimes sentenced Gramoz Rexhepi to 25 years of imprisonment in absentia. Although under investigation, the drug trafficking boss appealed the decision to the Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court and even the Constitutional Court.
In its first decision, the trial body sent the case back to the Supreme Court for retrial, but after the appeal was not accepted there, the file went back to the Constitutional Court, where on December 13, 2023, the 25-year prison sentence was upheld. According to the prosecution, Dritan Rexhepi committed the murder of the police officer Durim Kasmi for revenge after the officer had hit one of his friends who had shot the tires of the car in front of the police station.
