David Prendi, arrested following an operation led by SPAK, in connection with an investigation into fraud against European citizens through a network of call centers operating in Albania, will remain in custody. This was decided by the GJKKO, which, during a hearing to reassess the security measure, decided to leave Prendi's 'prison arrest' in force.
Prendi escaped the first police action, while being declared wanted by SPAK, but was arrested a few days after the operation, which extended to the premises where the call centers operated.
According to SPAK, the activity, which was carried out from Tirana, but which "fished" European citizens, was led by the brothers Agim Prekaj, Alfred Prekaj and Arjan Prekaj. The investigations began after a denunciation made by the Italian media, more specifically by the show "Le Iene", which investigated the way it was operated not only in Albania, but also in Italy, even revealing the involvement of an Italian police officer.
From the videos filmed by the Italian journalist of "Le Iene" who was infiltrated as an employee in this call center, precisely in the offices located on the 9th and 13th floors of one of the towers in Tirana, it can be seen that it is a well-organized call center, with separate work stations, defined roles and staff that operated in Italian, French, Spanish and German.
According to SPAK, the organizers had set up a sophisticated security structure, with several protective perimeters, using not only static film cameras, but also civilian surveillance personnel, outside this Center.
The operation took place on January 15 and 16, but without being able to find the equipment in the Call Center offices, which appeared to have been moved earlier. This raised suspicions that the operation might have been exposed.
But from the investigations, BKH has identified the means that have removed the computers and other equipment of the Call Center. After tracking them, in a short time, several people, mainly transporters, were caught red-handed, who had moved the equipment from the place where they were located to another rented environment in another tower. On their initiative, the investigators immediately went up to the fifth floor of this tower, where they found another “Call Center”, under construction.
The operation resulted in the arrest of Remir Gjoligaj, Endri Gjata, David Qerimi, Elis Merkaj, Rentjan Peposhi, and Odeas Kuqi, who were caught red-handed, and the subsequent detention of two others, suspected of being call center employees and accused of computer fraud.
A day later, on January 17, arrest warrants were issued for the three brothers Agim Prekaj, Alfred Prekaj and Arjan Prekaj, as organizers, who remain wanted.
