The body of a 45-year-old Albanian man was found lifeless and almost charred inside the vehicle he was traveling in when it went off the road under circumstances and causes that are still unknown and have shrouded the scene of the incident in mystery.
The Albanian warehouse worker, father of three, whose name has not yet been released, was returning from work at the factory to his home in the village of Legoli in Pontedera, Italy, where he lived with his wife and children. But surprisingly, in a nearby parking lot, before the turn to the road home, the vehicle was seen falling into a stream, emitting smoke and engulfed in a massive fire.
One night, after firefighters discovered the charred body of a man inside a dark-colored Ford Fiesta, destroyed by flames and pushed into a stream in the hills outside the village of Legoli, among dense vegetation, there is now an identification by acquaintances and relatives of the victim.
This morning, the carabinieri said that the victim is an undocumented Albanian worker, but DNA tests are still pending. In addition to the firefighters, carabinieri from the San Miniato and Peccioli companies, as well as the provincial investigation unit, also responded to the scene.
Today's inspection ruled out the possibility of violent death and the documents will now be sent to the Prosecutor's Office, but suspicions remain strong after the evidence collected. The prosecutor handling the case is Dr. Fabio Pelosi.
By mid-morning, some acquaintances of the victim, whose names have not been released, arrived along the road leading to Legoli, the site of the tragedy. The 45-year-old Albanian, resident of Pontedera, was a father of three children. He left home the evening before he was found dead, after working in a warehouse. He was supposed to head to Alta Valdera, where the family has a house in the village. When his wife did not see him return, she tried to call him on the phone, which had gone silent. This caused the first questions, anxiety and fear that something serious might have happened to the father of the family. Anxiety that turned into sadness and despair today.
Investigations are underway for the victim, to determine if he had financial or personal problems, or if he may have met someone in that small parking lot in Legoli.
“We are not sure,” says a relative who arrived at the scene of the tragedy, “but everything leads to him. He leaves behind three young children. It is a great pain for everyone; I wanted to understand how things happened.”
Witnesses raise doubts
Local residents raised the alarm the next evening when a bushfire broke out.
"We saw smoke and then the car. No one initially imagined there was a man inside."
The Ford left the provincial road and entered a rural road, currently popular with truffle hunters. After a few meters, there is a parking lot, and from there the car ended up in the stream, falling several dozen meters before being completely engulfed in flames.
A young man told the carabinieri and firefighters that he saw the Ford Fiesta reversing into the parking lot between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. He thought the driver was reversing and then heading back towards the provincial road. Instead, at around 7:30 p.m., residents saw flames and alerted the firefighters.
There are many doubts, at least initially, about the circumstances of the tragedy. It is difficult to believe that the Fiesta went off the road due to an accident. Therefore, questions arise about the cause of the tragedy, informs Italian media.
Initially, some thought it was a car that had caught fire, after being parked in the parking lot for months.
"That car was towed a few months ago," confirmed a truffle hunter, who came to Legoli to explore the forest and then turned back.
Upon learning of the father's death, the municipal administration of Pontedera took steps to support the family.
"We express our deepest condolences to the family and relatives," said Social Affairs Advisor Carla Cocilova.
