Hekuran Cumani, a 23-year-old Albanian, was found dead in the early hours of this morning in the parking lot of the Faculty of Economics and Mathematics at the University of Perugia.
The young man, according to preliminary investigations and evidence collected by the Italian police, appears to have arrived in the capital of Umbria yesterday from the Marche region, with a group of friends.
Cumani was killed in Via Pascoli, while he was a resident of Fabriano. He also had Italian citizenship, as he received a fatal wound to the chest.
According to the "Corriere dell'Umbria", the victim had arrived in Perugia from the Marche region last night with a group of friends to spend a few hours partying with his company. They visited several bars and then arrived at the "110 Caffè", located opposite the parking lot where he was fatally injured and where a fight may have broken out between groups of young people, over trivial matters.
The attack occurred at around 4:30 a.m., at the height of a dispute, the motive for which is currently being determined by investigators, while a search for the attacker or attackers is underway, based on evidence collected. State Police, who are coordinating the investigation, will also review surveillance cameras in the area, which may help determine the exact circumstances of the incident.
Footprints found on the asphalt of the parking lot suggest that the young man tried to walk away a few meters after the attack, before falling to the ground, not far from the entrance to the Mathematics Department.
Investigators are currently ruling out drug-related issues behind the altercation, suggesting instead a trivial motive, namely a banal quarrel. The murder is believed to be unrelated to the university environment. The Perugia Prosecutor's Office has opened a murder investigation against unknown persons.
