Hajdari calls the emergency number 112, which connects him to the 118 medical service. "My sister is not feeling well," he tells the operator during a call that lasts 11 minutes. Then, the young man loses consciousness.
“I couldn't save them, I couldn't save them.” These words, repeated over and over again, are evidence of Turim Kola's pain in front of his relatives and friends. He has just been released from the Pisa hospital, where he was admitted for poisoning. “ I lost consciousness, ” he says.
Turim Kola has escaped the carbon monoxide that, on Wednesday evening, took the lives of four members of his family: Arti Kola, 44 years old, a painter; his wife Jonida, 48 years old, a housewife; his son Hajdar, 22 years old, an electrician; and his daughter Jessica, 15 years old, a student.
At 21:48, the carabinieri managed to raise the alarm, after two of them were poisoned along with Turim, the victim's brother, while trying to enter the apartment in the village of Rughi, where no one was opening the door. The prosecutor in the case, Paola Rizzo, has opened an investigation into multiple homicide by negligence and has ordered an external examination of the bodies as well as blood tests to confirm that the cause of death was carbon monoxide. According to preliminary data, at least the son Hajdar was still alive in the first moments of the alarm.
Event dynamics
At 7:58 p.m. on Wednesday, Hajdari calls the emergency number 112, which connects him to the 118 medical service. " My sister is not feeling well," he tells the operator during a call that lasts 11 minutes. Then, the young man loses consciousness.
The ambulance arrives at 20:03, but to the wrong address. Hajdari had given, probably confused by the monoxide, the number 168 instead of 186, a difference of about 350 meters. The ambulance does not leave, asks neighbors and rings the bells of surrounding apartments, but fails to find the correct address. At this point, it seeks the help of the carabinieri, who manage to identify the person who had given the alarm and thus the correct address.
At 21:46, ambulances are in front of the Kola family's door. Turim Kola and two carabinieri attempt to enter the apartment, but the lack of oxygen makes them feel unwell and they are transported by ambulance. Firefighters, who have arrived in the meantime, secure the building. The 118 doctors can do nothing but confirm the death of Arti Kola, his wife Jonida and children Hajdar and Jessica, found in the girl's bedroom.
Investigations into the boiler
The prosecution must determine whether the boiler, which turns out to be new and partially still wrapped in cellophane, was registered, whether it was properly installed and whether it had undergone the checks and approvals provided for by law. The apartment where the tragedy occurred has been seized by order of the judicial authorities.
The house was owned by Arti Kola, who had bought it about three years ago, but the family had only moved there six or seven months ago. The apartment was allegedly partially restored by Arti himself, with the help of some friends. Investigations will clarify who installed the boiler.
Pain in the community
The event has deeply shocked the small community in the province of Luça. Friends and family gathered at the home of Arti's mother, the grandmother of two children. For hours she was unaware of what had happened, until, over time, she understood the tragedy and someone was forced to confirm it: her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren had lost their lives. After the news, she had a serious health condition and was treated in her apartment by the 118 service.
The Kola family was highly respected in Porcari. For this reason, the Porcari Carnival parade, scheduled for next Sunday, has been canceled. Instead of the activity scheduled for the parish on Saturday, a prayer vigil will be held in the church of San Giusto in Porcari, after a memorial service that took place in the church of Segromigno in Piano.
Even in Camigliano, in the municipality of Capannori, at the high school that Jessica attended, her classmates collected her poems. Bouquets of flowers and a red heart-shaped balloon were placed in front of the Kola family's house.
In Porcari, says the mayor, memories go back to February 28, 1992, when carbon monoxide killed Raffaello Malanca, his wife Piera Calistri and their two daughters, Ilaria and Greta: they were found dead in their home due to carbon monoxide poisoning. /Adapted from Corriere della Sera
