The High Court has upheld the decision of the Appeals Chamber of the Criminal Court of Albania (GJKKO) for the life imprisonment sentence for Florenc Çapja and his uncle, Ardian Çapja, considered the leader of the well-known criminal group of the Çapja of Elbasan. They were found guilty of the double murder of Nezir and Gentian Beqiri, father and son, in 2012.
The decision was made by a panel of judges composed of Sandër Simoni, Sokol Binaj and Enton Dhimitri, who dismissed the appeal filed by Ardian Çapja, Florenc Çapja, Etjen Cani, Klajdi Dokoli and Ervis Bardhi, leaving in force the decision of the Special Appeal dated November 15, 2023.
According to this decision, Klajdi Dokoli and Etjen Cani were sentenced to 25 years in prison each, while Ervis Bardhi was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
The case is related to the decision previously issued by the Special Court of First Instance for Corruption and Organized Crime, which on April 19, 2023 found Ardian Çapja guilty of the double murder that occurred in 2012 and of creating and participating in a structured criminal group, sentencing him to life imprisonment. Florenc Çapja and Jorgo Leku (alias Olsi Leka) were also sentenced to the same sentence.
In the same trial, Klajdi Dokoli and Etjen Cani were sentenced to 25 years in prison, while Ervis Bardhi was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The defendants were found guilty of the murder of Nezir and Gentian Beqiri, which occurred on the morning of August 15, 2012 in the city of Elbasan, inside the victims' apartment.
Ardian Çapja and members of his family have been involved in a series of serious criminal events that occurred in Elbasan over the past 16 years, including numerous assassinations. In June 2021, the Special Prosecution Office formally charged this group with murder in other qualifying circumstances, production and possession of weapons of war, and creation and participation in a structured criminal group.
With the decision of the Supreme Court, the sentences handed down by the lower levels of the judiciary become final.
