The death of Pope Francis in the early hours of Monday morning was a shock to many, especially after several public appearances over the Easter weekend.
Easter is the most important holiday in the Christian calendar and, although Pope Francis did not lead the main services of Holy Week and Easter, he did make a few brief appearances.
Meanwhile, hundreds of believers have gathered in St. Peter's Square, in Vatican City, to pay their respects.
The pope, who was the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, died at 7:35 a.m. local time on Easter Monday.
His death comes a day after he appeared in St. Peter's Square to wish "Happy Easter" to thousands of believers.
He was released from the hospital last month after five weeks of treatment for an infection.
