A 32-year-old Albanian man has been sentenced to three years in prison by French authorities after being caught working on a cannabis farm. The cannabis plantation was discovered in a village of just 250 inhabitants, in the area between Mende and Saint-Chély-d'Apcher, in Lozère.
Inside a multi-story house, authorities seized 132 marijuana plants as well as specialized equipment for growing them. According to French media, each floor of the building was adapted for different stages of cultivation, turning the apartment into a sophisticated illegal laboratory.
The court also ordered his deportation after the end of his sentence, permanently banning him from returning to France.
French authorities described the case as an important blow against illegal drug cultivation in rural areas of the country, where criminal activities often try to go unnoticed.
